Reeve Don Kroetch joined more than 50 medical, nursing, physiotherapy, respiratory, and paramedic students from the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and SAIT for a Medical Skills Weekend sponsored by Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP), Covenant Health and Flagstaff County.

The two-day event (April 21 to 22), which included an EMS demonstration at the Galahad Care Centre and a variety of skill stations at the Killam Health Care Centre, was designed to introduce participants to the broad range of skills that health professionals in rural communities are expected to use every day, including suturing, IV starts, and wound care.

Kroetch addressed the future health professionals at a County-sponsored dinner at the Killam Agriplex, impressing upon them the benefits of working and living in the Flagstaff Region.

Students were also treated to swimming at the Agriplex and tours of Battle River Implements and the Battle River Generating Station.

RhPAP sponsors similar events in rural Alberta communities throughout the year. The events provide rural communities with a unique opportunity to make a positive impression on future healthcare professionals by showcasing local amenities and attractions.
