The “TEXT with 9-1-1” service is now available to Flagstaff County residents.

This service allows people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired to communicate with 911 operators by text.

Registered users are still required to call 911 in an emergency situation, but once the call starts, a 911 operator will initiate a text message conversation.

"This is a big improvement, allowing for two-way communication between a dispatcher and someone who is deaf," says Kim Cannady, Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Coordinator.

To register for the service, contact your wireless provider or visit Text With 911.

The Strathcona County Regional Emergency Communications Centre, which provides 9-1-1 call answer and dispatch services to Flagstaff County, started offering this service Tuesday, August 1, 2017.
