In response to queries regarding the historic Simpson Barn, Flagstaff County would like to point out that while Council recently approved a list of repairs to be conducted on the barn, the County is not funding those repairs.
The Simpson Barn’s current owners are eligible to apply for a Historic Resource Conservation grant through the Alberta government.
In May, County Council passed a bylaw designating the Simpson Barn as a municipal historic resource. As part of that designation, which is defined in the bylaw, the Simpson Barn “shall not be removed, destroyed, disturbed, altered, rehabilitated, repaired, or otherwise permanently affected unless the proposed changes to the property are approved by Flagstaff County before the work proceeds.”
Last month, Council approved a list of proposed repairs to be made to the Simpson Barn to help restore it to its original condition when it was built in 1924. The required work includes replacing the cedar shingles, repairing the windows, repairing the cupolas and replacing the weather vane.
